Reliable, Affordable HandleI made the switch to old school safety razors about 7-8 years ago and never looked back. My previous handle was a Merkur style with a butterfly opening. But over the past few months one side was becoming a bit more “scratchy” than the other. It never cut me, but it was noticibly more uncomfortable than the other side.So over the Christmas holiday I decided to treat myself to a new handle. I’ll admit I mostly bought this one because it looked cool. When it arrived I was initially disappointed to discover that it was not a butterfly-style opener but the very old school kind where you unscrew the top altogether to switch the blades. But after a few moments I had figured it out. That’s where the disappointment ended. I’ve been using it for over a week now and it’s probably the best handle I’ve ever used. It’s got a thick, grippy bamboo handle with a nice weight to it and the shave is as smooth as you can imagine. I love the fact that this technology was perfected a hundred years ago and they’ve been trying to trick us into new versions ever since.I ordered another 100 pack of blades as well. Last time I ordered Astras and that lasted me nearly 5 years. This time I got a variety pack which is worth it for the array of old school packaging alone. But this was I’m hoping to find my new favorite brand of blades. If you’re new to safety razors I’d say definitely take the plunge. They’re cheap, reliable and give a great shave. Don’t worry about all the accoutrements either. I initially did the whole thing with the badger hair brush and the old timey shave soap. Fun but not necessary. I just use a Barbasol style shaving cream and change my blades every 7-10 shaves. (I have pretty light facial hair so I can sometimes skip a day without anyone noticing, especially in our current mask wearing era LOL).

So comfy I got uncomfortable, but gosh darnit… Severely Recommended.I know. The headline is like What?.Well.Let me explain:This is a gorgeous piece of work, but it takes a bit of nuance. Now mind you, I’ve shaved with safety blades for decades. I know how to work it and I know how each brand is different in shape and style. Some are aggressive, some are not. This one is not, but it gets the job done impeccably, if you get how to use it.Don’t get me wrong: This is not a difficult process. It’s just figuring the pressure you need to put in and the angles you want to work. You get that it’s a beautiful and elegant piece of equipment that should last for many, many years and save tons of money over disposable blades as the decades (yes, I said decades) go by.Heirloom potential in full.Keep and pass it down.

Nice designDouble edged razor works well when I let the whiskers on my neck get too long for the Mach3 razors to get.Gets longer whiskers better, but isn’t quite as close or as comfortable as the Mach3s.Fat wooden handle is easier to control than the thinner metal ones on other double-edged razors. Looks nice.Would buy again.

Holds blade securely.I had a ‘butterfly’ opening for blade before. But one side started to not close fully. No longer usable. This razor has a one piece pull down blade holder. A bit harder to put a new blade in, but secures better and stays in place. I ordered the thicker handle not realizing it would not fit in the standard toothbrush hole! Fortunately my toothbrush holder wooden so I could ream the hole larger!

Overall a good productI’m fairly new to the double edge safety razor world, having previously only used the multi-blade cartridge razors (Gillette, Schick, etc). This is my second razor handle of this variety and it is more aggressive than I was expecting. Not a bad thing, but I have to get used to it. The angle at which the blade is seated is just different than I’m accustomed to, so I carved myself up pretty good. I shave my face and head – the face part was easier because I can see in the mirror what I’m doing, but the back of my head and neck were a different story. All in all, a good product, just be more careful than I was!

Update! Things went south…This is a wonderful product sold at a very fair price. I’d been considering a straight razor but went for this razor instead because being sleepy while shaving with a straight razor could be dangerous. I shaved with this soon after it arrived and removed a week’s worth of growth and did so without incident. It’s a great product and I can easily recommend it!***Update: I shaved four times with it, about once every few days, and then it happened. While brushing my teeth, I glanced over at the razor (that I kept in a small coffee cup next to the sink) and saw to my horror that the bamboo handle was split wide open from top to bottom! I’m very gentle with all my things and I suspect water had seeped in and hit the dry innards and caused a mushrooming out like a dry spong soaking up water. It was a great shaver but died way too soon and so now I have an all metal safety razor on the way.

Great razorI have used this razor a couple of times now and absolutely love it. Got tired of paying $$$ for cartriges, so thought I woudl go retro and try a saftey razor. I have found it is a better shave and spending way less for blades. This razor is exatly as advertised. It is very solid, and high quality materials. I alos prefer the way you load the blade into this razor, as opposed to lots of others (you unscrew the top as opposed to the “butterfly wings” on other razors. Highly recomend it.

Will not buy disposable razors againI bought this almost 6 months ago along with 100 razor blades, and so far I am on my second razorblade. I shave about twice a week on the average, so it does get heavy workouts. I bought it because the lubricating strips on disposable razors bothered by skin and sometimes cause me to nick myself. A little more caution is required with this safety razor, but I have now mastered it and get close shaves very quickly.
